Dr. Mariam understands first-hand the physical, emotional, social and professional toll that a toxic work environment during training or practice can cause for a physician or physician-in-training. Thus, she has dedicated her career to preventing others from feeling alone in their struggles.

Drivers of physician burnout include workload, work inefficiency, lack of autonomy and meaning in work, and work-home conflict. Studies show that approximately 42-60% of physicians report experiencing burnout symptoms. Additionally, studies reveal ~24-29% of physicians report clinical depression or depressive symptoms and up to 24% of physicians experience anxiety disorders. Empath Medicine is passionate about combatting physician burnout, depression and anxiety by way of helping physicians with finding a greater sense of purpose and meaning, better navigating toxic work environments, healing from the trauma of professional abuse, and engaging in a better self-care to achieve greater work-life balance.

Empath Medicine understands the stigma that may be associated with seeking mental health treatment as a physician and, thus, offers discrete, concierge services with self-pay options. Unaddressed mental health concerns in the long run are more likely to have a negative impact on a physician's professional reputation and practice than reaching out for help early. Empath Medicine is thus dedicated to supporting medical professionals in a discrete manner to encourage reaching out for help before it is too late.

An estimated 300-400 physicians die by suicide in the U.S. per year. The suicide rate among male physicians is 1.41 times higher than the general male population. And among female physicians, the relative risk is 2.27 times greater than the general female population. In one study, 23% of interns had suicidal thoughts. However, among those interns who completed four sessions of web-based cognitive behavior therapy, suicidal ideation decreased by nearly 50%. Thus, at Empath Medicine, we believe we can help address and even prevent physician suicide one physician at a time through our integrative approach, utilizing psychotherapy, life coaching, medication management, and natural non-pharmacological supplements.
