Meet Dr. Mariam Aboukar

Clinical depth, human warmth, and care that makes room for the whole person.

Dr. Mariam Aboukar is a Board-Certified Psychiatrist and the CEO & Founder of EMPATH Medicine, a private psychiatric practice created around one core belief: excellent mental health care should be clinically strong, emotionally intelligent, and deeply human.

Her work brings together psychiatry, psychotherapy, trauma-informed care, mind body medicine, emotional intelligence, and thoughtful medication management. Patients are given space to be heard, understood, and actively involved in the decisions that shape their care.

Her story

Medicine grounded in presence, curiosity, and connection.

Dr. Aboukar built EMPATH Medicine to create the kind of psychiatric experience she believes patients deserve: thoughtful, collaborative, unrushed, and centered on the full story behind the symptoms.

Her clinical perspective has been shaped by rigorous medical training, child and adolescent psychiatry, psychosomatic medicine, trauma work, psychotherapy, academic medicine, and advanced studies in emotional and social intelligence.

“The goal is not to fit a person into a formula. It is to understand what they are carrying, what they need, and what will help them move forward with more clarity and steadiness.”
01Whole-person psychiatry

Symptoms matter. So does the story around them.

Care considers mood, attention, sleep, relationships, life stress, physical symptoms, trauma, environment, routines, and the emotional patterns influencing daily life.

02Emotionally intelligent care

Feeling understood is part of treatment.

Dr. Aboukar is especially skilled at creating a space where patients feel safe enough to speak honestly, ask questions, and work collaboratively instead of feeling judged or reduced to a diagnosis.

03Integrative treatment

Medication is one tool, not the whole conversation.

When appropriate, treatment may combine psychiatric medication management with psychotherapy, trauma-informed strategies, emotional regulation, behavioral skills, and mind body support.

04Across life stages

Care for children, adolescents, students, professionals, and adults.

Her work spans young people and families, college and graduate students, working professionals, medical trainees, trauma survivors, and adults navigating complex psychiatric or mind body concerns.

Education & clinical training

04 · Trauma

Compassionate, trauma-informed care for individuals whose nervous systems, relationships, sense of safety, or daily functioning have been shaped by traumatic experiences, including children and adolescents from war-torn regions.

How she practices

Evidence based care without losing the human connection.

Dr. Aboukar’s approach is integrative. She draws from medical psychiatry, psychotherapy, emotional intelligence, trauma-informed care, and behavioral regulation rather than relying on a single treatment lens.

Her goal is to help patients understand what is happening, why it may be happening, and what options are available so treatment feels collaborative and informed.

Clinical expertise matters. So does making sure the person in front of you feels safe enough to use it.

Beyond clinical care

She believes a balanced life matters for physicians, too.

Outside of her clinical work, Dr. Aboukar enjoys singing, practicing yoga, and spending meaningful time with loved ones. Those parts of life reinforce a principle that also shows up in her work with patients: health is not only about reducing symptoms. It is also about building a life that feels sustainable, connected, and worth being present for.

That perspective is especially important in her work with students, physicians, medical trainees, and professionals who are often expected to function at a high level while carrying enormous emotional pressure.
